I think the technique photographers use is that they take several pictures at one time, one after the other, and choose the best picture out of all of them to use.
My favorite presentation was by Jessica Towey. It was straight and to the point. She didn't crowd the slide with tons of information, but gave important details the reader would like to know. The presentation taught me the best ways to take an action shot and where the best lighting would be. It also talked about multiple sports instead of just one. Pictures were also included to mix in with the facts and flow easily.
